Busick, North Carolina, a remote town near Mount Mitchell State Park, received 30.78 inches of rain as a result of Helene — a record for the highest rainfall in the Appalachians from a tropical weather system. It beats the 27 inches that fell over the Virginian Appalachians in 1969.

President Joe Biden announced on Sept. 30 that he expected to travel to survey impacted states like North Carolina in the wake of Hurricane Helene.

Millions of homes and businesses remain without power across the Southeast as the region reels from the aftermath of Hurricane Helene and its remnants. Hundreds of water rescues have taken place across Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee and Virginia since Helene's brutal landfall in Florida's Big Bend area late Thursday.

Crews continue to navigate treacherous conditions including extensive tree and flooding damage, as well as road closures.

After hitting Florida’s Gulf Coast, Helene tore through the Southeast, leaving dozens of people dead and millions without power, unleashing historic rain and flooding in parts of Georgia and the Carolinas.

Helene, now a weakened post-tropical cyclone, left chaos and destruction across the Southeast. A damage estimate said the storm will cost billions.
