Murray Sinclair, a former senator, judge and the chief commissioner of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, is being remembered by Manitoba leaders for his decades as a champion of the rights of Indigenous people.

Murray Sinclair, the Anishinaabe former senator and judge who led Canada's landmark Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) into the country's residential schools has died at 73, his family said in a statement.

Murray Sinclair, who was born when Indigenous people did not yet have the right to vote, grew up to become one of the most decorated and influential people to work in Indigenous justice and advocacy.
