The former president was born Oct. 1, 1924 in Plains, where he has lived more than 80 of his 100 years. He is expected to mark his birthday in the same one-story home he and Rosalynn built in the early 1960s — before his first election to the Georgia state Senate. The former first lady, who was also born in Plains, died last November at 96.

“The Carters have a lot of milestones,” said Jill Stuckey, a Plains resident and superintendent of the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park. “They were the longest-married presidential couple at 77 1/2 years, and now he is the longest-living U.S. president.”

Former President Jimmy Carter turns 100 years old on Tuesday and his hometown celebrated his centennial birthday early. On Saturday, Georgians gathered in the downtown area of his hometown of Plains, Georgia to celebrate the two things that the town is best known for: peanuts and and the former president.
