The player, José Hugo De la Cruz Meza, was involved in a regional tournament game between two low-level local teams, C.D. Juventud Bellavista and U.D. Familia Chocca, in Huancayo, Peru, when lightning struck the field, the Peruvian newspaper La República and other local news media reported.

In the wake of the tragedy, there have been calls for better security efforts, particularly in high-altitude places such as Huancayo where the capital city is 10,659 feet above sea level. Just earlier this year, another 35-year-old soccer player was killed after being stuck during a match in Indonesian.

Footage showed many players falling face first to the ground as lightning struck the field in the 22nd minute of the match between local teams Juventud Bellavista and Familia Chocca

TMZ reports that in the midst of a soccer match on Sunday (Nov. 3) between the Juventud Bellavista and Familia Chocca at Coto Coto stadium in the Peruvian city of Huancayo, Jose Hugo de la Cruz Meza was struck by lightning and killed immediately.

Teams in a local tournament in the Andean highlands east of Lima were leaving the pitch amid a weather delay when lightning struck, injuring several other players.
