California’s Proposition 36 was officially enacted over the holiday break, following voters’ overwhelming approval of the initiative aimed at driving down serial theft and fentanyl crimes through harsher prosecution and more aggressive drug diversion policies.

After winning widespread support in the November election, Prop. 36, which increases penalties for certain theft and drug crimes, is now in effect.

Voters went on to pass California's tougher-on-crime Proposition 36 with the largest margin of any measure on the ballot, which highlighted a bit of a disconnect between state lawmakers and the people they represent.

California voters this election season gave their stamp of approval on several laws aimed at cracking down on crimes such as retail theft and car break-ins.
