The federal government is sending $460.8 million in disaster recovery and prevention funds to Michigan, Wayne County and Detroit.

Some major assistance from the federal government will soon help the city of Detroit address some infrastructure problems and much needed repairs to its old sewer lines.

Nearly $350 million in federal funding will help Detroit residents and businesses be better prepared for future flooding events. On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) presented the city of Detroit with a check for $346.

City leaders formally accepted $346 million in funding and began detailing how they plan to spend the money to repair infrastructure ahead of future weather events on Wednesday.

Funds for Michigan, Detroit and Wayne County are to help people recover from flooding, tornadoes and storms in late August 2023, officials said.

The Biden administration is giving the city money from the Disaster Recovery Grant funds from HUD after the 2023 flooding.

"We’ve got a sewer system built to handle 4 inches of rain in a 24-hour period, which was great for the 20th Century," said Mayor Mike Duggan.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development on Tuesday announced $461 million in disaster aid for Detroit, Wayne County and the state of Michigan to help recover from devastating storms.
