The United States is the largest contributor to the Kenya-led Multinational Security Support mission in Haiti, which has struggled to attract funding for its operations.

The security assistance mission, while approved by the U.N. Security Council, is not a United Nations operation. The mission has so far made little progress toward helping Haiti restore order with only 400 Kenyan police officers on the ground so far and a shortfall in funding.

The UN Security Council extended on Monday its authorization of the multinational policing mission in crime-ravaged Haiti, but without any call to transform it into a UN peacekeeping mission, as suggested by Port-au-Prince.
