A prominent Ugandan opposition politician was kidnapped during a book launch in Kenya over the weekend, transferred to Uganda and is being held at a military jail in Kampala, his wife said on Wednesday.

The wife of Ugandan opposition figure Kizza Besigye says he was kidnapped in neighboring Kenya and is being held in a Ugandan military jail.

Leading Ugandan opposition figure Kizza Besigye has been arrested multiple times, pepper-sprayed, faced spurious charges of rape and treason, and once fled the country in fear of his life.Besigye ran again against his former patient in 2006 but spent most of the campaign defending himself against rape and treason charges that the High Court later found were trumped up.

The head of the UN’s HIV program UNAIDS said her husband Kizza Besigye, a former Ugandan opposition politician, had been kidnapped by the country’s government. Besigye was the personal doctor to now-President Yoweri Museveni in the 1980s, when the latter was a rebel leader.

Besigye was arrested in Kenya and taken across the border to a Ugandan military jail, according to his wife, Winnie Byanyima, head of the U.N. HIV/AIDS program.
