How did Éowyn slay the Witch-king of Angmar if he wasn't alive?
Feb 16, 2012 · While the Witch-king was distracted, Éowyn drove her sword where the head of the wraith would have been, slaying him. Merry's sword was magic enough to break the curse, so when Éowyn stabbed him, he was no longer invincible, that power had gone with the curse when Merry stabbed him.
Is it Éowyn or Merry who kills the Lord of the Nazgûl (or both)?
Aug 26, 2012 · If Merry had pierced the Witch-King's heart, the story would have been different as the Hunt for the Ring notes indicate - that would have been a fatal wound. As it stands, instead the wound Merry inflicted was especially painful because of the nature of the sword and acted as a great distraction, allowing Eowyn to deal the fatal blow.

On a second point, in many instances in the LotR prophecies play a large role. The Witch king could not be killed by a man, this doesn't mean that everything which is not a man (a vase of flower is not a man, but I doubt that it could have killed the Witch king by falling from a balcony :-) )

(If interested check the stories of 'Bhasmasura', Narasimha, Ravana etc). The same happens in LOTR. Witch King had received a boon that no man could kill him.

Gandalf - the Maia - could theoretically have killed the Witch King, but the Witch King's destiny was already writ in stone, and Glorfindel (possibly speaking with the voice of Mandos under Eru Himself) had already intimated his end. Undoubtedly Eowyn had been destined for this purpose from the beginning of time.

May 18, 2015 · Only a handful of magical swords - like the one Merry gets in the barrows and eventually uses on the Witch King - can injure the wraiths. Merry's blow severs the bonds that chain the Witch King to earth, so to speak, making him mortal. Then Eowyn finishes him off. All but a few blades would cease to exist if they touched a wraith. –
